Telegram from Sir J. Jordan, Peking, No.136, dated
July 10th, 1907.
I have received a report from His Majesty's
Consul General at Canton stating that on July 6th
the British launch was the victim of a piratical at-
tack about nine miles from Canton. The total losses
of launch, crew and passengers amount to about 400
dollars; no lives were lost. He has asked for my
support in pressing energetically for the immediate
payment of the claim, and I have given him my author-
isation to do so.
Further, I have informed the Wai-wu Pu that I
shall be obliged to place the case in the hands of
His Majesty's Government unless immediate steps are
taken for the satisfaction of the claims and the
arrest of the pirates.
In my opinion vigorous action is justified on
this occasion by the persistent neglect, which the
Chinese Government have displayed in enforcing the
scheme
